-
- you have basically no reason whatsoever to complain. if you need hst
- celullar mode then just run the 7/5 flash on the modems.
-
- ever since the removal of hst cellular mode me and you are basically the
- only people in this news group that ever griped about it. that just goes
- to show you out of the thousands of hst users in this group, how many
- of us use hst cellular. the reason why mnp10 is not in the modem is because
- every modem manufacturer in the world that uses mnp 10 has to pay royalties
- for using it. USR licensed mnp10 and it hasnt trickled down to the
- couriers as of yet. the 11/01 firmware made no mention of the removal of
- the hst cellular mode, but its printed in black and white in the 01/23
- sdl code in the pdf file that comes with it.
-
- there probably would be no real penalty in going back to the 7/5 flash
- on the answering modem. unless cellular phones supply distinctive ring
- and caller id.
-
- on page g-3 of the manual:
- HST cellular modem connections can only be made with other us robotics
- modems in HST cellular mode. the modem cannot be used to place a voice or
- data call to another phone or modem when it is in this mode.
-
- and as far as being locked, the original poster was correct. a hst cellular
- modem in hst cellular mode WILL NOT connect to ANY OTHER HIGH SPEED MODEM
- without operator intervention (having to know first hand that your next
- caller is calling without that modem, and plugging the modem into a regular
- line etc). using HST in hst cellular mode [&f3] sets the modem to answer
- using a bell answer tone. any modem that calls that modem (which are not
- hst /hst cellular calls) will presume that the answering modem is a 300
- /1200/2400 modem and connect at 300/1200/2400.
-
- also im sure given the right kind of jack you could probably tweak any modem
- to connect and send/recieve data over a cellular phone if you have it
- properly tweaked (like using a good carrier time out value), dialtone
- disabled and having to dial manually, and finding a good stable transfer
- rate... a full 3 watt cell phone (not one of those piece of junk 300mw
- hand held jobs) would probably help too. shit when i used to work at radio
- shack a long time ago, i used the stores 1400lt laptop modem to place calls.
- and that wasnt a "cell modem", sure the connection was a little noisy but
- that modem did not have error correction.
